Proctology – Hemorrhoid Banding

Questions and Answers

What is proctology in the context of hemorrhoid banding?

Hemorrhoid banding is a medical procedure where rubber bands are used to treat internal hemorrhoids. Hemorrhoids are unpleasant, swollen veins in the area of the rectum and the anal canal, which may cause pain, bleeding, and an itchy feeling.

The banding procedure is performed by a proctologist (a doctor specializing in disorders of the anus and the rectum) and includes several stages:

  1. A proctoscope (a small tube with a light source) is inserted into the anus to detect the internal hemorrhoids.
  2. An elastic band is applied to the base of the hemorrhoid. The band cuts off the blood flow to the hemorrhoid.
  3. With time, the Hemorrhoid drops off due to lack of blood supply – usually within a week or two.

This procedure is considered to be simple, quick, and has a relatively short recovery time. However, as with any medical treatment, there are potential risks and discomforts – and so, it is recommended to consult an experienced doctor or proctologist before making a decision on having this procedure done.

What is proctology?

Proctology is a specialty of a gastroenterologist who studies diseases of the anus and rectum. The proctologist can be a gastroenterologist or digestive tract surgeon by training. The proctological examination consists of an examination focused on the pathology of the rectal area, the examination of the anal margin, the digital examination of the anus, endoscopy and rectoscopy. This procedure can highlight anal fissures, hemorrhoids, and anal condylomas. Proctology is considered the preferred solution for hemorrhoids.

How long does the banding procedure take?

The length of the banding procedure may vary by the type of procedure, size and location of the hemorrhoids, and the patient’s medical condition. Usually, the actual banding procedure should not take long, and can be done in several minutes. However, there may be additional requirements for post-procedure care. Recovery time and medication may affect the overall treatment time. Therefore, to assess the overall amount of time required for the banding procedure, it is important to consult with your attending physician, who can provide specific information regarding the specific case.

What are some tips for preparing for the operation, and how can things be made easier for the patient before and after the examination?

Before the procedure, the patient must perform a rectal enema.  There may be regional pains following the procedure – We recommend standing up as much as possible, though it is also possible to lie down, and take painkillers after consulting the doctor.
We recommend not to drive for the first few days after the procedure. Before a hemorrhoid banding operation, it is important to prepare well in order to guarantee a smooth and safe procedure.
